We went back to McAdenville Christmas town, the last time we visited was in 2010. I recorded some video clips and will post that when I have more time.
This image below is a 30 second exposure, and a tripod is a must. I also didn’t want any digital noise, so I set my ISO to 100.
Canon 5DMkIII, EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, f/11 at 30sec, 60mm, ISO-100, tripod
This one is not so bad for ISO 20000, there’s some digital noise but I’m happy that I could see the duck. I shot this in Raw to get as much detail as possible. I actually shot all images in Raw tonight.

I finally have a chance to test out the zoom technique posted by Scott, and actually turned out a lot better than I had hoped. Since this is a long exposure of 1.3 seconds, a tripod is a must. I manually focused on Santa and the reign-deers, make sure it’s on manual focus and not auto focus. I pushed the button then start zooming, once it’s done this is the result. I think this looks so cool, this will make a good Christmas card.

I love that zoom effect you did…mind sharing how you did that? That would be soo fun to try out!
Hi Noy, I updated the post for you, and linked to Scott’s post for more tips. If you set you f/stop to 8 or higher, and your ISO low, you will have plenty of time to zoom. Bo and Lee weren’t very patient and I didn’t have that much time to play.
I see you are enjoying your MkIII’s ISO capabilities. You got the zoom effect down. Really neat one here.
I would suggest playing with rear-sync flash when you have people in your photo. That way, you get the light and then a little added light for them.
Scott, the zoom effect is really neat and plenty of lights to play around. I do need to invest in a flash and thanks for the tips.
The video turned out really nice. It’s hard not to feel joyful at this place.
And I just love that photo of the angels blowing the trumpets. Feels like Christmas is in the air.
cn, the place is so neat and I didn’t have to sneak around taking pictures of Christmas lights. The photo of the angels I had to shoot from the ground up and had my tripod low. I sat on the grass for a couple of minutes and well worth it. 🙂
Can you or Bo let us know a week or twos in advance for next year when y’all will be going to see the lights at McAdensville? Vikki and the boys love seeing Christmas lights, and I have been telling her that y’all go to a town that is filled with lights every year. Thanks.
Hi PaNoy, we’ll let you guys know. There are several places that have lights, but this town is free and one of my favorite places to visit during Christmas time.
