August Full Moon

It was so cloudy tonight and I didn’t think I would be able to see the full moon.

The Full Moon of August is known as the Grain Moon. In Algonquian it is known as Sturgeon Moon. Other names are Red Moon, Green Corn Moon, Lightning Moon, and Dog Moon. In Hindi it is known as Narali Poornima or Raksha Bandhan. Its Sinhala (Buddhist) name is Nikini Poya. The Full Moon rises around sunset and sets around sunrise, the only night in the month when the Moon is in the sky all night long. The rest of the month, the Moon spends at least some time in the daytime sky. Source.

The moon looks reddish to me tonight, the proper name for it might be the Red Moon.

I visited my dad today and this is what his neighbor did to their yard.  And no, we don’t live in sunny Florida.

  1. There is no full moon here in MD thunderstorm and lighting. I guess your dad don’t live in a place have home owner association where they can protect you from a neighbor like that. That’s is just terrible to wake up everyday and see that pink plastic bird. I would get a bee bee gun and start shooting them down.

    • Hi salalao, they are not very strict in his neighborhood, unlike mine where you can’t put any kind of tall ornament in your front yard. My dad is actually amused by this, he asked me if I took the picture of the birds. I think it was the wife Birthday and this must be her gift. I don’t expect it to be up very long, they might take it down by next week.

I was glad to see the full moon, but only had a clear shot for a few minutes.

  2. I didn’t realize August moon had so many names. The moon has been looking especially pretty for the past few nights.

The house reminds me of a movie set house. It somehow looks like it’s been built recently. And the pink flamingo is funny. I’m glad it’s only going to be up for a short time.

      • Scott, like something from a ghost story. It was a lot of waiting on my part for the cloud to pass and the moon to shine through, and it’s well worth the wait. 🙂

    • Cambree, the house was built in 1997, shortly finished after my dad’s house. At first I thought someone was planking them, and if this were in my neighborhood I would have gotten a fine or a warning already by the homeowner association. I’m sure it was one of the best gifts she has gotten for her Birthday this year.

I think the moon looks prettier the night before the full moon, and the weather was a lot better but I was too busy watching the Jack Dempsey and missed it. 🙂

      • I wonder if the full moon had anything to do with the success of the Dempsey hatching?

So what will happen to all the plastic pink flamingo now? Maybe someone in Florida will want them. 🙂

        • Cambree, I’ll keep you update on the flamingo, they might still be there this weekend. 🙂

All I know is that it was a lot of work for me, having to photograph the full moon, and video the Jack Dempsey. I think it will be interesting to see them in the next few days or so. They should be swimming up by then. The mother will put the baby in her mouth and blow them out to teach them how to swim. This will be a neat sight to see.
