Food Photography Assignment

I hope you will join Scott Thomas Photography‘s new assignment.  This is not a Throwdown so you don’t have to worry about cooking, just have to take a new food picture.  Scott is looking for a simple snapshot of a plate of food. It’s a challenge for you to create new photographs of food that will make our mouths water, for our stomachs to growl, and our noses to twitch imagining the aroma of the food presented in the photography. He wants you to photograph the food like you would see it in a magazine or an advertisement for a restaurant. I know this will be quiet a challenge for me, please visit Scott’s Food Photography Assignment for more detail.

As for my example here, perhaps it’s too simple of a snapshot. I took this picture last Saturday at my dad’s house, my sister made Kao Piek for us.  It is an Asian (Lao/Vietnamese) version of chicken noodle soup. This was one of my mom’s specialties, I see that my sister has not perfected it yet but very close.

Manual, EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, f/5.6, 1/80sec, ISO 320, focal length 80mm, white balance auto, center weighted average metering

  1. The composition of this photo rocks; like the depth of field and the soft out of focus on the edges. Nicely done, Nye.

I will have to have this when I go to Laos in 17 days! It looks so yummy!

  2. I really want to learn how to take better food photos Nye. I wish you lived near me so you could give me some lessons. Yours turned out beautifully. It is so crystal clear and no yellowy/grayish film. Mine always have that unless my husband takest the photo for me. 😉
