A Portrait of Lee

This is my contribution to Scott Thomas Photography’s Assignment 9: Portraiture. Lee has agreed to pose for me if I would take her to her school Beach Bingo.  I was pleased with the outcome, the background is a china cabinet covered with a sheet.  The natural lighting came from the window across from her and this was taken around 6:45 pm (18:45).  Lee picked out her own outfit, the Thai embroidery hat complimented her complexion well.

I kept my promise, we got to the Beach Bingo by 7:00 pm.

This was taken with a Canon T2i, EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, Aperture Priority, f/4, 1/25sec, ISO-200, Exposure bias 0, focal length 50mm, center weighted average metering, closeup cropped, tripod mounted.

  1. Great photo. You must be very pleased with it.
I love the way that Lee cooperates so willingly too – the dead butterfly, panning, and now this.

    All the best, Boonie

        1. Boonie, thanks. Spending time doing things together is good, I think we spend too little time with our children these days especially if both parents have to work.

    1. Hi Scott, thanks for such awesome grade. 🙂 Working with kid takes time and patience and the key that I learned is to engage them. I’m glad that it came out good on my first attempt with her.

    1. Thanks Jeffrey, learning new technique is good for me, and the plus side is that I get a great portrait of Lee. I have to enlarge and frame this one. 🙂

    1. cambree, Lee has been a great help and all I have to do is to tell her that I’m learning something new and she’s willing to help, but hard to get a natural looking smile from her.

  2. I can get a bit apprehensive (and camera shy) about being in photos too.

But I laugh easily and remember to think about a happy or funny scene. Something like a cat riding a unicycle. 😀

    1. cambree, Lee likes to do the cheese smile, not very pretty on her, unlike my niece she could make a perfect smile every time.

Thanks for the tip, I need to tell Lee to think about happy and funny stuff next time. 🙂

  3. Oh, this is lovely, she is a beautiful girl. The hat is real elegant to her, and you arranged a very nice light. A very nice portrait indeed.

    1. photospaz thanks. I shot a portrait of my co-worker Lee prior to this, but his turned out like a mugshot so I didn’t post his photo. I guess Lee is a very popular name after all. 🙂

  4. Nye, this is indeed one of the best portaits I have seen!!! You have done an excellent work here – and you are lucky to have a lovely model!

  5. Very sweet picture and I love the light. Lee is quite the fashion stylist! Love the colors.

  6. This is a fine portrait. It shows Lee as a lovely child who is also gifted with strength and confidence. Not to mention good taste in hats!

    1. Thanks for your kind words Gerry, if read between the line I could see stubbornness. She mentioned to me once that she wants to be a hat maker. 🙂
