I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  My sister Bee brought  her new puppy to my dad’s house yesterday to play, both my second sister and dad said that it is ugly. I’m not sure if they meant literary.  See, it is a custom for Laotian to say something is ugly when it is cute, especially for a new born baby so that the evil spirit won’t come and take the baby away.  But I’m not sure in this case if it applied to dog and cat as well.

I guess in his case, it’s all speculation and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

She named him Patch because of his colors and I’m glad he has found himself a loving home.

Lee loves dog and cat, and drooling over him. Despite us being Asian, I hope you don’t take the drooling part literary, and no we don’t eat dog or cat.  It looks like Lee has found her new playmate, and I’m sure they will be spending more Saturdays together.

He got her cornered.

My dad and second sister finally planted their garden.

A new trellis went up next to the lemongrass planting bed.

It is a trellis for snow peas.  Snow peas is one of the earliest-known cultivated plants with evidence of having been cultivated in a region that is now along the Thailand-Burma border over 12,000 years ago. Source.

They do like to climb.

I’m beginning to think that this is going to be another year of fruitless Pomegranate.

At least they have pretty flowers and you could use the leaves to make tea.

My dad and second sister planted Asian corn, they had a good crops last year.

They planted a row of normal size cucumber, and the cucumber plants  will climb on trellis.  This makes picking so much easier, and a lot cleaner.

And long string beans, which my dad has better luck than me.

If you are wondering about my sister’s seedlings, they are still very tiny. My sister is baffled and not sure why it is taking them so long to grow.  It doesn’t look like I will get to plant the Thai eggplants this year.

Bamboos are some of the fastest growing plants in the world, and kind of scary how you planted them in your yard and the next thing you know it appears in the middle of your neighbor’s yard.  This one is at the edge of my dad’s yard and he poured a cement foundation for it so it wouldn’t be able to spread.  It was a lot of work, but I think he sleeps better at night knowing that his bamboo shoots won’t be bothering this  neighbors anytime soon.

The shoots came out early and he has enough to make Bamboo soup.

we still have some cold nights,  and the frosts did a lot of damages to the new leaves.

I’m glad that the Rhododendron came out later, and were in full bloom on Saturday.

There are plenty of spring flowers blooming during this time.

It was dusk when we got home, and I’m glad that there was still some daylight for me to take picture of my purple Iris.

Bo’s Paeonia ‘Krinkled White’ finally bloom.

My Knockout Roses are in full bloom, and a few tall bamboo shoots in the background. We have been getting a steady rainfalls and this has helped the plants tremendously.

I apologize for so many photos, it is impossible to take a few shots when you are at Biltmore. I will miss visiting this place in the summer, but hope to spend more time camping with my family.

Lee will miss their Margarita Pizza the most.

I’m sure she will miss their gift shops and garden as well.

The Japanese wisteria is in bloom.

This is Max’s first trip to Biltmore and he had to beg and whine before his owner agreed to bring him along.

The weather was too nice to be inside, but I paid a visit to the Conservatory because I want to see the cactus, orchids and other exotic plants.

As we drove toward the Farmyard, we saw horse trailers and thought it was a campground area.  It would be nice to camp at Biltmore but I don’t think they have anything like that. This is also a nice place to go horseback riding and we passed several that were horseback riding and enjoying the scenery.

These two are handsome and they posed for me.

A view of the Farmyard, and the small black spots on top of the hill are black cows.

This is a nice way to tour Biltmore, and we never did get to ride the Segway mainly because Lee is too young.

I do love this shot, so many curious onlookers.

This looks like a mixed breed, and it is actually a feather footed breed chicken.

The mother goat gave birth to the baby the night before.  I think it is kind of odd to refer to the baby goat as kid, but that’s what they are called.  The kid is looking for the mother’s milk.

I was surprised to see the featherless neck chicken. This is the result of a genetic mutation, and it is to their advantage if they were to live in a hot climate environment. The bare-necked chickens are more resistant to heat and therefore produce better meat and eggs. I can’t say the same if they lived up north, the owner might have to knit scarfs for them.

By the time we got to the Kitchen Garden Lee was too tired to levitate for me, but she managed to do a few take. If you read up to this point, I want to thank you for reading my Biltmore posts and it might be a while before we could go back to visit.  Biltmore is still my favorite place to visit in North Carolina.

My sister filled her fishpond with dirt on Saturday.  She saw the video of her fish, and said that those are not Butterfly Koi but long tail comets.  When she mentioned long tail comet, the name Hale-Bopp comet  came to mind. I thought to myself, your are kidding right? I thought they were fat Butterfly Koi.  She did have 1 Koi left and gave it to Bo.  It was big and Bo released it in our backyard fishpond.

Just two weeks ago this was what it looked like.

Bo came and got the rocks.  He is thinking about building another level to our fishpond and make a waterfall. I’m sure this will be a fun project for him and can’t wait to see the waterfall.

My sister’s tulips made me think of the tulips at Biltmore Estate.  I don’t want to miss the tulips this year, and I’m hoping that we will get to visit this weekend, or next weekend when they have the Festival of Flowers starting April 7th. I did a video of the tulips in 2010 and this was when I first learned how to shoot video.

The season definitely starts earlier in this part of the country.  When I was growing up in Brooklyn, New York, we used to call the Azaleas a Mother’s Day flower since they bloom around Mother’s Day,  May 10th.  And here it is only the end of March and it’s already budding and should be blooming in the next few days.

I recall the day my dad and I bought this flower.  Not very often that I get to go to the flea market with him on a Thursday and he bought 2 plants and I bought 2 also in 2009.  I gave one to my sister Bee and kept one in my garden. My dad’s plants look a lot healthier than mine, and I’m wondering if the one that I gave to Bee is still alive.

My dad’s Cherry Blossom starts to bloom also. It should be in full bloom by next weekend.

And as for the seedlings, they are slowly growing and these are the Thai eggplants.

These are chili peppers. It will be a few weeks before we could plant them outside.

One of my co-workers asked why Chinese restaurants have fish aquarium, does it bring good luck?  If that’s the case, we must be the luckiest people around.  My sister’s fishpond pump recently died and she has decided to give her fish away.  Bo went and got some today, and here is one that he left in the 55 gallon tank with the Jack Dempsey Fry. The first batch Fry are 7 month old now and they seem to get along with these new butterfly koi long tail Comets. Her fish look fat because my dad over feed them and this one needs to go on a diet.

Here are 2 more 7 month old Jack Dempsey Fry.

The mother Jack Dempsey and her 3 month old Fry are in the 30 gallon tank. If we were to count, I think we might have close to 1,000 Jack Dempsey Fry.

I won’t be eating fish for a while.  This is Thai Ladna from a new Thai Restaurant that’s owned by a Lao family.  The food is pretty good and they are not stingy with their chicken.

And updating on my seedling, the pickle cucumber plants look pretty good.

As for the cherry tomatoes, I think Lee dropped too many seeds and most came up. I didn’t pull them out fast enough. The ones that I left are very thin, they don’t look too good to me.

The beets in the garden came up also and a good thing that we have been getting a few good showers in the last week or so.

The Blue holly flowers are in bloom.  This made me think of a coffee plant, but the floral scent doesn’t smell as good as the coffee flower.

The bees are buzzing and doing their thing.

Bo once mentioned that if his Zoysia grass came up, he would roll on it for us to see.  I see that Max has beat him to it.

I almost cried when I saw this, but I couldn’t say anything to Lee. My poor flowers.

It is a beautiful flowers carpet in my front yard.
