When I was videoing Bo’s Jack Dempsey in a lip lock position the other day, I didn’t know that they were matting at the time.  Today Bo saw that his Jack Dempsey has laid eggs on a flat surface rock, this is so exciting and we should have the fry in a couple of days.

Bo has a 30 gallon aquarium and houses the two parents only, so they should be okay. Jack Dempsey are good parents, they take good care of their eggs and the fry once they hatch in about 3 days. In the video, the female constantly fans the eggs to keep off any debris that might settle on her eggs. This debris can infect the eggs causing a white fungus growth on them as you can see in the photo below. The female will usually remove the bad eggs before it spread and infected the other eggs.

Bo has an empty 55 gallon aquarium in the garage that he could use for his baby Jack Dempsey once they are 3-4 week old. I didn’t count the eggs, and if most survived then he will have plenty of Jack Dempsey swimming around. Below is a picture of the female Jack Dempsey, she’s very protective of her eggs while I was photographing her eggs.

Bo tilted the rock to keep the debris from falling on her eggs.

Lee also has a fish aquarium next to Bo’s Jack Dempsey, both aquariums are sitting in the living room.  I find that watching fish is very calming, and studies have shown that contemplation of fish in an aquarium seem to have a significant effect in reducing levels of stress and anxiety. Several years back one of my co-workers was under a lot of stress at work that it was beginning to have an effect on her health.  Her family doctor recommended an aquarium to reduce stress and it has helped her significantly.

Lee’s fish tank is a fresh water aquarium, but the setup gives you the feel of salt water aquarium with all the sand and seashells.
