My Dad’s Garden May 28, 2011

My dad’s garden has grown by leaps and bounds.  I bet it must be in the water, or is it the tradition that he lets my sister planted all the vegetables because she has the green thumb in the family.  I might have to book her for next year.

I think the tomato plants are too leafy and need some pruning.  The best way is to pinch and remove suckers that develop in the crotch joint of two branches.  As for pruning the leaves, he can thin some out so that the sun can reach the fruits.

I was amazed of how much the string beans have grown.

I think the rains have made every grown faster, at least in this garden anyway.

My sister was afraid that the cucumber plants won’t bear any fruit by July 4th week since we’ll have a family reunion that week. I don’t think she has to worry about that anymore.

The Thai eggplants look a lot better this week.

My dad’s garden is very sunny, and I think the Chili pepper plants like full sun.

My sister has to weed the corn area.  This is a lot of work for her and I can’t say she enjoys gardening much.

My sister didn’t even notice that she has some buddings on the Jasmine tree until she saw me taking a picture of it. I do love the aroma and this variety is the doubled-flowers and smells like Jasmine tea.

Lee was admiring my mom’s Orchid. The bottom branch is in the 18th week of blooming.

My Garden May 28, 2011

I finally get to use my original Lily pond again, this big flower pot inspired me to dig my current fish pond back in 2006. Things have looked a lot different since then.

This has been blooming for over a week now.

I was afraid that it might be ruined by the heavy rains that we had in the last few days.

A lot of TLC for my Thai eggplants this year and they still look this bad.  I still have high hope that I’ll get to eat the fruits, I planted this row and another small raised bed so there should be plenty to make Tum (spicy salad) and Thai spicy curry soup.

In comparison to my dad’s Chili peppers my plants are very small. I hope with all the rains that we have had, they will take a growth spurt soon.  The marigold flower is to keep the bugs away, also brighten up the garden.

The wet garden was from the rain that we had yesterday and last night. My 3 cherry tomato plants look very healthy.

I can’t wait to pick these, my first pick is definitely to make tum cucumber or spicy cucumber salad.

I saw a lot of green worms at the very beginning and had to hand picked them out. But I haven’t seen them for a few weeks now, not sure if the birds ate them.

I need to separate my Sawtooth Coriander, and they are forming seed pods. The Pennyworth plants are in t he background.

The long string beans that I replanted a week later after realizing that the one that Lee planted wouldn’t come up in this spot.

I went to Lowe last week and saw that they still have spring onions for sell.  I didn’t have any more room in my garden and decided to plant them in pots instead. One thing about pot gardening is that you have to make sure to water them daily.

My Kaffir lime tree stayed inside during the cold winter months and looked very healthy. I have one shady spot in my garden and decided to leave it there.  I think it will do well, probably better than full sun.

My bamboo trees that I got from the temple took a growth spurt for the first time.  You can learn a lot from watching the bamboo trees sway gracefully in the wind. I learned to make myself more like the bamboo tree these days.  In this ever changing world we have to learn to adapt and when the fierce rains and storms pass through, you see destruction swept through and take down the mighty big trees.  And when the storm is over, the bamboo trees stand tall.
