The ghost of Pi (brother) Rahud continues to haunt the students at the University.

A University is an institution of higher education for countless students, a place where there is no discrimination between different social classes.  But it’s the many faces that  pour in year after year that made the story, one might say it’s an urban legend more scarier overtime, the story often get passed down from the senior and Junior classes to the freshman classes.

Often it was the story of a personal encounter with a ghost spirit and often tell amongst a group of friends that create a lot of fun and excitement.  But truth is, you would not think so if you’ve encountered the real McCoy.

Thinking back to the time of my freshman year at the University in Krung Thep, I was lonely and homesick.  Since I was from out of town and had not gotten used to city living and all my new friends seemed like strangers to me, so I spent my days reminiscence of life back home and all my old friends that I loved and missed dearly.  My best friend passed an entrance exam and got accepted to a well known University in the province that’s close to home.

As soon as I took my last final exam, I went to visit my best friend at that University, but at the time they were not done with their exams and often held a study session at the school cafeteria and some group pulled an all-nighter.

Prew, my best friend was worried that she might not pass her exam since it was the subject that she’s not good at, and didn’t do too well on her midterm.  So she was cramming for her final exam, and all I could do was to be there to show my moral support, and might pass her something to munch on once in a while.  Shortly after 10 PM, some of Prew’s friends came to join us, the atmosphere that was once thick became more relaxed.

One of Prew’s friend named Ging told the group that “Ann couldn’t make it, she went to Tum Boun (merit making) for “that brother” and was too tired to come.”

Prew’s friends were friendly so I didn’t feel out of place, and all agreed that they would take a study break, and when Ging mentioned “that brother”, everyone became silent. Ging went on a said, “That brother was Ann’s Pi Rahud and when he passed away, Ann has changed into a different person.” And then I asked about ‘that brother’ because I wanted to know more, everyone inched up closer, and looked left then right as if not sure of the situation.

Ging whispered as if afraid that someone might hear, and said “He was older, the senior amongst us, real nice and everyone used to love him.  Not long after that something terrible happened and he hung himself by the light pole at the football stadium because he would not complete in time and was asked to leave, but the University kept things quiet.  Not just that, after he died strange things happened.  At first we all thought it was just a rumor, but Ann said that he came to visit her often.  She has not been the same since and moved out from the dorm and moved back home, she commutes to school now.”  There was a pause and everyone looked pale, then Ging continued telling the story.

“Ann’s boyfriend was his friend and saw his body because Pi Rahud texted him to come pick him up at the spot that he hung himself.  I couldn’t imagine how scary it must have been but Ann’s boyfriend was so frightened that he got sick and had to have a ceremony to call back his spirit.”

Prew cut in the conversation because she saw that everyone was afraid, “Hey, let’s change the subject, how can we concentrate on studying when we talk about stuff like this. Lets not talk about it anymore.” After looking around, it was real quiet since most students had gone back to their dorm.  We stayed till 2 AM, and dispersed after that, we rode our motorcycle back to the dorm and nothing scary happened that night.

Three days later, I almost forgot about the story told that night because I was busy hanging out with my friends, and I’ve heard countless ghost stories after that that it was no longer scary but kind of fun, that day we had planned on celebrating after the final exam.  I finally got to meet Ann, a solemn look on her face had caught my attention right away.  Ann was a very attractive girl, but very thin and had dark circles underneath her eyes.  She was very quiet, and while everyone was chatty and had a great time, she kept to herself.  I wanted to make her feel better so I started a conversation and found out that she was real nice, so we exchanged our photo stickers (back then it was very popular amongst teenagers.)  Her picture on the sticker looked totally different from this Ann, in the picture you could see the sparkles in her eyes and she had more curved back then.  I was very curious as to why such a drastic change, and what made her change this much but didn’t dare ask her.

It was after midnight when the restaurant closed, Ann agreed to come stay at the dorm with Prew.  But since we didn’t have enough motorcycles for the number of people, we had to pack all three on the motorcycle and I was the driver, Prew sat in the middle and Ann sat at the back.  During our ride back to the dorm, Prew fell asleep because she had too much to drink, and since I was not familiar with the road, I had to keep looking at the street signs.  It was real dark and the road was confusing, I got us lost.  I stopped the motorcycle to ask Ann for direction, and at that time I didn’t feel so good because it was eerie and there were no passerby.

“Why stop…don’t stop.” Ann told me, I was in a state of panic when I saw Ann shaking uncontrollably, she closed her eyes as if there were something scary following us.
