It has been a while since I updated my dad’s garden. I took this picture on June 28th, got up extra early before sunrise.

Things have changed since then. My visit yesterday started out with chasing this butterfly, Lee did most of the chasing. My dad and second sister never saw it but luckily I was able to capture it with my camera, butterfly is a very fascinating creature to me.

Crape myrtle was one of my mom’s favorite flower trees, we planted some at my dad’s house and they came out earlier than ours, I’ve 3 light pink Crape myrtle trees at my house.

Looks can be deceiving, this might appear to be very fruitful but no pumpkin thus far, my second sister thinks that she is loosing her ‘green thumb’ touch.

My dad string beans have reached the top of his metal trellis.

He still has plenty of cucumbers.

His Thai eggplants still have plenty of flowers, they’re a late bloomer this year because during July 4th of last year, there were plentiful. Can you see? Lee is still chasing the butterfly.

As you can see that my dad already harvested most of his corns, the white cloth is his marker for next year seedlings.

They’re the tiny ears of corn that I got seeds from my Hmong neighbor, it’s no more than 5 inches long and very sweet and sticky. My dad is thinking about planting more next year.

His peppers are doing well.

No fruit for his pomegranate tree this year, he thought it might need 2 trees to cross-pollinate so he planted another one next to it, maybe he will have a better luck next year.

Cherry tomatoes are so expensive in the grocery store, so it’s nice to have them in his own backyard.

The stalk of his lemongrass are not as big as mine. He saves his from year to year and it’s very difficult for them to survive during the winter months, I on the other hand would buy mine from the Asian market and soak the tip of it in water until they take roots, then plant them in the ground. This saves me a lot of hassle, something that my dad might consider doing next year.

This is definitely not your garden companion, but more like invader.

This is really impressive. Wow! Looks like every year it’s getting better and better. I’m going to plant more corn next year as well. And can you ask him for some seeds for me, if he has some to spare? Thanks.

Hi PaNoy, I’ll ask if he has some to spare because it looks like my brother in law is interested in planting some after trying the corn on Saturday and my dad harvested most of it already.

your dad’s garden looks a lot like my mom’s garden. I took some photos of my mom’s garden, but it was during the late evening. Unfortunately the lighting was pretty much zero. So I’ve got to visit her garden again during the early day. We’ve been eating a lot of Tum Mak Tua since her string beans are growing out of control.

lady0fdarkness, Tum mak Tua is good with Thai eggplants and papaya, I don’t know if you have ever tried fixing it that way. We visited my dad’s friend in St. Petersburg, Fl once and I love the fact that you can grow papaya and banana all year round, I used to want to move there because of the nice warm weather, but it appears that cost of living is higher than where we live, everything is so expensive over there.

Wow!!! everything looks good.. I think your dad’s garden can easily supply a small lao/thai restaurant with fresh produces.

Glad to see Lee is having so much fun visiting her grandpa’s garden. I remember doing that as a kid too.
I’ve tasted those small corns before – I didn’t like how they are so sticky. But my mom loves them. She said they are difficult to grow, yet it looks like your dad has no problem at all.
Thanks again for sharing the garden updates with us. Whether it’s at the Biltmore Estate or your own backyard, it’s still all very nice.

Cambree, thanks for such nice feedback, it’s lots of photos and I’m glad that WordPress have given us so much free space.
My dad didn’t have any problem, but then he used to grow corn when we were living in Thailand. We all liked it, and it must be the first time Bo has seen it because he told my dad that he picked them too early, they’re still very tiny and should let them grow a bit more. I think Bo learned something new.
I’m glad that Lee enjoys visiting Grandpa, my dad and second sister enjoy our company and we look forward to visiting them every weekend, and my other sisters join us when ever they have time, it’s kind of nice.

Your dad has a nice garden. Lots of healthy veggies.
The “Crape myrtle trees” are pretty. This is also my mom’s favorite flowering tree. She said they grow all over her farm back in Laos. Someday I will plant one of these for her.
In the meantime, the city plants them all over as sidewalk landscaping and shade trees. Spring and summer is when they are in full bloom.

Lila, I’ve never seen Crape myrtle tree in Laos, made me wondered if it’s called Tun Pieuw in Thai, although they have bigger flowers I thought. My dad enjoys spending time in his garden.

Yes, my mom said they only grow along the river bank. It is native to Asia.
But I forgot to ask her what it’s call in Lao.

Lila thanks, I need to look that up.
