Today, I made a more tradition Lao dish, Tum Buk Houng or spicy papaya salad, somehow it just doesn’t look as good as Darly’s som tum, may be better luck next time, but it does taste good.
The Ingredients: 2 peppers, 1 garlic clove, 1 teaspoon of sugar, 2-table spoons of mixed fish sauce and shrimp paste, 1 sliced lime, sliced cherry tomatoes, and shredded green papaya.

Updated 6/5/2008: The dish below uses the same ingredients as above, except that the papaya is a bit ripe, and I added peanuts. If you have dried shrimps, it also tastes good Tum with Tum Buk Houng.

Lyn, Since my last flu shot, I became allergic to a lot of food, including Padek, and if I put it in Tum Buk Houng, I’d suffer with itches for hours; like a typical Lao person, I have Padek in my pantry, it’s one of the things that my mom left for me.
