Chinese New Year is the only time of the year that I feel like I’m Chinese since I moved down South. When I was living in NYC, all I have to do was go to Chinatown, and I instantly fit in, feeling Chinese, seeing Chinese people and eating Chinese food, I rather miss doing that, and sadly we don’t have Chinatown here. When I was younger, my dad gave us money in a little red envelope on Chinese New Year, it wasn’t a lot but we knew that it was money inside. This is the first Chinese New Year without my mom, and sadly, I couldn’t even be there with my dad, I was extremely sick that day and missed out all the big celebration. The year starts out bad for me, but let’s hear what others have to predict about the year of the golden pig 2007.

China is bracing for a ‘mini’ baby boom in 2007 as many young Chinese couples want to have an offspring during the auspicious ‘Year of the Golden Pig’, which comes only once in 60 years. Babies born in the ‘year of the Golden Pig’ are believed to have good fortune and will lead a comfortable and wealthy life. The pig is one of the 12 animals on the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac, which follows the lunar calendar. According to Chinese astrology, people born in pig years are polite, honest, hardworking and loyal (I don’t know how true this is, I know several piglets, and not all fit into the description, but anyway that’s what they said.) They are also supposed to be lucky, which is why many Chinese like to have babies in a pig year. If after reading this and decided that you also want a little piglet, then you still have time, join the crowd, think piglets.

Fortunetellers say the Chinese zodiac’s year of the pig, will be a good time to have a baby, but they also warn of rising epidemics, disasters and violence around the world. The Year of the Pig will not be very peaceful, said Hong Kong feng shui master Raymond Lo. Feng shui is the ancient Chinese practice of trying to achieve health, harmony and prosperity by using specific dates, numbers, building design and the placement of objects. Pig years can be turbulent because they are dominated by fire and water; two of the five elements that Chinese mystics say are the basis of the universe. According to Raymond Lo, fire and water are conflicting elements and tend to whip up trouble. Fire sitting on water is a symbol of conflict and skirmish. We’ll also see more fire disasters and bombings.

Malaysian feng shui master Lillian Too agrees that there is trouble ahead. She said that there could be epidemics, and worried about bird flu. The only suggestion that she has is to eat healthy foods and take care of your health. I think we all should be able to manage that.

Singapore fortuneteller John Lok predicts that the Iraq situation would not settle, that U.S. President George W. Bush will have a bad year and that France’s next president may be a woman. I think it’s very interesting; we’ll just have to wait to see how true this will be.

Most soothsayers said the world economy would keep booming, though people should invest cautiously. According to Peter So, a celebrity fortune teller in Hong Kong, he thinks that because of the water element in the Year of the Pig, the economy will continue to grow, which also paves the way for another round of interest rate hikes.

As for me, even though it starts out bad, I’m still very optimistic about the future; don’t let the list of the above predictions prevent you from doing what you want to achieve this year. Everything in life, I think it’s all how you look at it.
